Biography
Jarmila Mazourová learnt to play the piano privately with his aunt Zdenka Rolčíková (from 1949 to 1956). Her first compositional attempts has dated from this time. After graduating from state high school in Brno (1958), she went to the Janáček Academy of Perfoming Arts, where she became the first woman to study composition. She studied with Vilém Petrželka and Ctirad Kohoutek, in the 3rd and the 4th year with Jan Kapr. She performed her graduate’s composition Symfonický dialog (Symphonic Dialogue) for piano and orchestra on 3 October 1963 with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra and Zdeněk Mácal as a conductor. After graduating from JAMU, she taught the piano and improvisation for one year as an external teacher at the Faculty of Education in Brno, then music theory and piano at LŠU (People’s Art School, now ZUŠ = Primary Art School) in Mikulov. At the same time she was expanding her approbation by the part-time form of piano studies at the Brno Conservatory (graduated on 5 June 1965 in Josef Kysela’s class). During her teaching activities in Mikulov she dedicated herself to composing instructive pieces for the pupils. While teaching at the school, she became acquainted with playing the dulcimer, and started to play this instrument under the expert guidance of Eva Schwarz.
Since 1967 she had been teaching at LŠU Kosmákova in Brno-Židenice, where she had been employed for 18 years devoting herself to teaching the piano, flute, music theory and to coaching. Alongside her teaching, she had completed the first cycle of playing the dulcimer under the guidance of Milada Kapitanova.
In 1975 she completed postgraduate studies of composition at the Janáček’s Academy of Music under the guidance of A. Piňos, C. Kohoutek and M. Ištvan. From 1981 to 2011 she had been teaching composition at music schools in Brno. For her teaching she created the education programme and methodological support. In 1984 she went to teach to LŠU Brno-Líšeň, since 1987 she had been teaching at LŠU Antonínská (now ZUŠ Smetana 8). In recent years she has been teaching at the music school in Mikulov, where she teaches the piano, and – until recently – composition.
Jarmila Mazourová is still active as a composer. Her works are performed at home and abroad, on radio and television, many of them were recorded, some released on CD and DVD.
