The pianist and composer Jan Šimíček was the son of a well-known organist and choirmaster Fr. Šimíček. He attended the secondary school and the school of music in Novy Jičín. In years 1957- 63 proceeded to the Conservatoire in Ostrava, which passed in the piano class of Heda Vláčilová- Stonavska. He then studied the piano at JAMU in Brno (1963-1967) with Frantisek Schäffer, later with Dr. Otakar Vondrovic.
In 1962 he took part in a piano contest (Beethoven) in Hradec near Opava, where got 3rd prize. In 1966 he won 2nd prize at the International Smetana Piano Competition in Hradec Králové. Between the years 1968-1971 he acted as a lecturer on piano playing at the Pedagogical faculty of Palacky University in Olomouc. In February 1971 he got the post of music editor at the Czech Radio in Hradec Králové. Here he was working as musical editor, dramaturgist, producer and later on as editor-in-chief. From 1981 to 2004 he acted as musical editor and dramaturgist in Czech Radio Brno.
In the International Prix musical de Radio Brno competition he was very succesful and got twice 3rd prize, once 2nd prize and twice 1st prize. Several times he performed with Czech orchestras (Radio orchestra Studio Brno, Philharmonic B. Martinů, Philharmonic Hradec Králové), and since 1998 he has played at over 20 piano recitals in style "classic-jazz romantically". He devotes himself also to composition. His compositional output in the field of classical contemporary music includes over 40 titles of chamber music, choral and symphonic music. In the area of popular and jazz music he wrote over 80 compositions. In the year 1998 Czech Radio Brno issued his CD with title "Black and White Keys", and in the year 2005 Studio Rajchman issued a CD with title "Piano Siesta".
