Jan Meisl graduated from the Conservatory in Brno, having studied bayan (button accordion) under Jan Tesař. He then attended the Gnesina Russian Academy in Moscow, where he studied bayan under Iosif Purits and composition with Kyrill Volkov. He continued his composition studies at the Academies of Performing Arts in Prague, and in Bratislava. While he was still at school, he took part in several Czech and international accordion competitions, and met with great success. He was a member of the chamber ensemble Bayan Trio Meisl. His solo performances as accordionist included concerts with the Vogtländische Philharmonie Plauen, Brno State Philharmonic, and the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic in Zlín. He had taught accordion, bayan, composition and music theory at the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava, since 2007 is a freelance artist in Germany and Czech Republic
Jan Meisl is an author of about 120 works of many different genres: solo, chamber, vocal and orchestral compositions, opera, oratorio, ballet, music for children, multimedia installation, music for film and stage. As a composer, he is a laureate of many national and international composition competitions.
He draws his compositional inspiration from spiritual, world and folk music, jazz and rock, balanced by a synthesis of classical forms, based on a search for new and natural sound possibilities.
