Biography
She studied composition and piano at the Janacek' s Conservatoire in Ostrava (1991-1999, piano with Zdenek Pecek and composition with Jan Grossmann and Edvard Schiffauer), and composition at the Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (master degree studies, 1998 - 2003) with Leos Faltus. She then continued her postgraduate (doctoral) studies with Ivo Medek at the Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (2004 - 2008, composition and theory of composition). She is currently teaching at the Janacek Conservatory, the Grammar school in Ostrava, and at JAMU in Brno.
Apart from her studies she participated in several courses for composers - International Summer Courses for Composers and Percussion Players Trstenice with Mathias Steinauer, Yuri Kasparov, Felix Baumann, Ivan Nebesnyj, Martin Smolka, Ivo Medek and others (1999 - 2004), International Courses for Composers Cesky Krumlov with Marek Kopelent, Vinko Globokar and Osvaldas Balakauskas (1999), Terezin Intermedial Summer Courses with Petr Graham, Ivo Medek, Vlastislav Matoušek (2001) and Ostrava New Music Days with Petr Kotík, Christian Wolf, Alvin Lucier, Yves Bosseur, Maria de Alvear (2001).
Her compositions were performed by orchestras throughout the Czech Republic and abroad (State Philharmonic Orchestra Brno, Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava with conductors: Emil Skotak, Petr Chromcak and Petr Vronsky), chamber ensembles (Soloists of OCNM, Czech Chamber Soloists with conductors: Zsolt Nagy, Pavel Snajdr) and soloists (Carine Levine, Sarka Curdova - Trompe, Petra Klementova, flute, Antonin Muhlhansl, saxofon, Helena Jankovska, alt) and were presented at many festivals here and abroad: International Music festival Forfest (1995, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2004), International Music Festival Janacek´s May (1994, 2000), Music Now Ostrava (1995 - 2000), Exposition of New Music Brno (2000), Bezruc\' s Opava (2000, 2004), Terezin Intermedial Summer (2001), Meetings of European Music Plus (2001, 2002, 2003), V:NM festival Graz (2001), Ostrava New Music Days (2001, 2003), Festival of Czech Music in Los Angeles at California State University, Long Beach and California Institut of the Arts (2003), 16. Internationale Gegenwelten Festival in Mannheim, Heidelberg and Bergfeste Dilsberg (2003), Movement, Sound, Space Opava (2003, 2004), Czech Dreams (2004).
Awards:
Generation Ostrava 1993 (1st prize), 1994 (2nd prize), 1999 (2nd prize), 2001 (3nd prize), 2003 (2nd prize) and 2004 (2nd prize), Radok´s Prize "Talent of the Year" - Nomination for the Giraffe Opera (2002), Leos Janacek Foundation Award 2003 (for the Symphony "Waters"), The Ministry of Culture Award (2003).
She was Artist-In-Residence at Werkstadt Graz (2001), she presented her work in the USA (Los Angeles), Niederland (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haag, Enschede, Zwolle), Germany (Köln am Rhein), Austria (Graz), Prag and she lectured at conferences in Brno, Olomouc. Her works are recorded for Czech broadcasting and Czech TV.
Memberships
She is a member of Ensemble Marijan - group for improvised music and multimedia (with composers Jan Kavan and Ivo Medek). This ensemble was founded at 2000 and performes teamworks of his members all over the world. One of the most interesting projects of Ensemble Marijan was the project „Fires" for chamber orchestra, two singers, one actor, dance group, video, electronic and fire effects, staged at Forfest festival 2002. Marketa Dvorakova is also a member of the women-composer group HUDBABY (The MUSICRONES), founded in 1997. In 2003 Hudbaby debuted with their first own CD (CD HUDBABY, LOTOS, 2003), their second CD is titled Čekám Tě! after the namesake sketch (piano miniature) written by Janáček into The Album for Kamila Stosslova shortly before his death. She was a member of jury (with composers Ilja Hurnik and Milan Bachorek) of the children competition Young Creation (2004).
